Useful information can cut in two directions
An evaluate question asks which missing fact would help assess the reasoning. Try the two-answer test: suppose the answer were yes, then suppose it were no. Would the credibility of the inference change? If both possibilities leave the important gap untouched, the question is probably peripheral.
The two-answer test is a guide, not a demand that every numerical question be reduced to yes or no. Widely different values might change the assessment in different ways. The key is whether resolving that uncertainty bears on a disputed link, relevant comparison, or necessary condition.
Explain both sides of a puzzle
A resolve exercise presents observations that seem difficult to reconcile. Treat both as given unless the question says otherwise. The correct answer supplies a distinction, mechanism, or missing fact that makes their coexistence less surprising. Merely repeating one observation does not explain the other.
Check whether the observations concern different groups, periods, totals, rates, or measures. Higher prices can coexist with higher sales if demand rises enough. Better screening can increase recorded cases while underlying disease falls. The question is what explains the particular pair, not whether a proposed fact sounds generally interesting.
Practice productive uncertainty
In real deliberation, rank uncertainties by how much resolving them could affect the decision. Evidence about a required constraint may matter more than another opinion about an already established benefit. Ask for information that could disappoint your preferred view as well as information that could support it.
After learning an answer, update the strength of the claim rather than overreacting. One adverse fact may justify a qualification, an alternative explanation, or more investigation. It need not compel complete reversal. Clear thinkers make their degree of confidence responsive to the evidence.
Worked example
A museum’s entrance fee rose, yet its annual ticket revenue fell. The manager attributes the fall to the higher fee.
- Evaluation question
- Did attendance fall substantially after the fee rose, and did other relevant conditions also change?
- Why it matters
- Revenue depends on both price and paid attendance; a decline in visits could outweigh the price increase.
- Resolving fact
- The number of paid visits fell by a larger proportion than the fee increased. This reconciles higher fees with lower revenue.
- Causal limit
- Explaining the arithmetic does not by itself show that the fee caused the attendance decline. A closure or competing attraction could matter.
